Photo by Morgan Griffith: Ninth District Congressman Morgan Griffith visited Normandy last week to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day. While in France, he visited the Normandy American Cemetery, where he took this photo of the grave of First Lieutenant Benjamin Kearfott of Martinsville and sent it to his family, who held a ceremony to honor Kearfott and other heroes of D-Day on June 6.
‘I will never forget being among the company of heroes at the 75th anniversary’
Ninth District Congressman Morgan Griffith joined fellow lawmakers, President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Marcron, and veterans in Normandy, France, on June 6 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day.
“It was a great honor to be on that hallowed ground for the occasion,” Griffith said. “President Trump and President Macron each spoke, paying tribute to the courage of the Allied forces who landed on June 6, 1944, to free a continent and rid the world of Nazi tyranny.”
“Afterward, I searched among the crosses of the Normandy American Cemetery for the gravesites of western Virginians killed in the battle. I visited about 14 in total and took photographs,” he added. “Although they now lie far from home, they are not forgotten in the places they came from, nor in the country where they died.”
One of the graves Griffith visited was that of First Lieutenant Benjamin Kearfott of Martinsville. The Congressman took a photo and sent it to his family in Martinsville, where a ceremony honoring him and other heroes of D-Day took place later in the day.
Later that evening, the group went to Juno Beach as part of an international ceremony, and on Sunday, they attended a re-enactment of the jumps made by the paratroopers over Sainte-Mère-Église.
“I will never forget being among the company of heroes at the 75th anniversary,” Griffith said. “And as long as our country stands, we can never forget the sacrifice and the bravery of the heroes of D-Day.”
During the trip, Griffith and other lawmakers met with members of the French National Assembly and paid tribute to the fallen of World War I at Suresnes American Cemetery.
