A 19-year-old Danville teen was killed early Sunday (Sept 8) morning when he was ejected from the bed of a pickup truck.
De Andre Najee Smallwood Davis was one of three passengers in the bed of a 1996 Ford F-150 pickup traveling north on Whitmell School Road about 12:30 a.m. when the truck ran off the left side of the road, struck an embankment and overturned, according to Sgt. Rick Garletts with the Virginia State Police.
One of the other passengers in the bed of the truck was transported to Danville Sova Medical Center, and the other was airlifted to Carilion Roanoke Memorial with life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the pickup, Cody Lee Barber, 19, of Dry Fork, along with two more passengers in the front passenger area of the pickup truck were not wearing seatbelts. They were transported to Danville Sova Health Center for treatment of their injuries.
Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash, Garletts said. Charges are pending.
No additional information is available at this time.
Trooper W.I Davis is in charge of the investigation into the single-vehicle crash that occurred at 12:32 a.m. on Sept. 8 on Whitmell School Road, three miles north of Mt. Crossroad in Pittsylvania County.
